Holidays nearing – my charitable choices
If there’s something topping my wishlist it’s donations for the following. No irony.
the st. james infirmary provides non-judgemental healthcare to sex workers, empowering them in this important aspect of their lives.
MADRE works for human rights, by working for women’s rights, empowering women and children in nations negatively affected by US policy. My favorite part? They partner with women ALREADY doing rights work for themselves and their OWN communties. From an article on site:
The women we work with may not be “experts” on gender oppression like Nicholas Kristof, but they are experts on the conditions of their own lives. They know what they need to guarantee survival for themselves and their families and what they need to do to improve things for the long-term. So there’s no need to airdrop women’s rights programs into poor and embattled communities. It makes a lot more sense to team up with the women who are already doing that work and provide the resources and training that they say is useful to effect the change they need.
Young Women’s Empowerment Project again, can you see a theme in regard to empowerment? Harm reduction approach to helping young sex workers, putting girls in charge of their own lives and destiny while providing resources.
Charity doesn’t have to be arrogant or distanced from the people it purports to help. People are truly their own best experts, and so, if you are feeling generosity inclined, don’t just buy me something, silly.
